A simple, refreshing upgrade from store-bought
Recipe #13 of My 100 Recipe Project

Growing up, lemonade came from the freezer aisle. Those little cans of Minute Maid concentrate we’d stir into water on hot days. It was simple, very sweet, and felt like summer.
Now, I find myself enjoying something similar, but cleaner, fresher, and just a little more thoughtful.
Because while I want my kids to stay hydrated, I don’t want to rely on sugary juices or neon sports drinks.
This is our upgraded version: fresh lemonade, made at home, with a few variations depending on the day.
A simple kid-friendly version, a lightly elevated one for adults, and a make-ahead concentrate that lives in the fridge.
🍋 Recipe 1: Classic Fresh Lemonade (Kid-Friendly)
Bright, simple, and not overly sweet
Ingredients
1 cup fresh lemon juice (about 4–6 lemons)
1 cup sugar
1 cup water (for syrup)
3–4 cups cold water (to dilute)
Pinch of salt (optional, enhances flavor)
Instructions
Make simple syrup
Heat 1 cup water + 1 cup sugar until dissolved. Let cool.
Juice lemons
Strain seeds and pulp. I used a simple handheld citrus squeezer.
Mix
In a pitcher, combine:
lemon juice
simple syrup
3–4 cups cold water
Taste + adjust
More water = lighter
More lemon = tangier
Chill and serve over ice.
Kid Tip
Serve in fun glasses with:
sliced lemons
reusable straws
🍋 Recipe 2: "Spa Lemonade" (Light Adult Version)
Less sweet, more refreshing, slightly elevated
Add-ins (choose one or mix)
Fresh mint
Sliced cucumber
Fresh basil
Splash of sparkling water
Adjustments
Use ¾ cup sugar instead of 1 cup
Add herbs while syrup is warm → steep → strain
Optional (adult version)
Add: vodka, gin, or limoncello
🍋 Recipe 3: Lemonade Concentrate (Fridge Staple)
This is that Minute Maid nostalgia.
Ingredients
1 cup lemon juice
1 cup sugar
1 cup water
Instructions
Make simple syrup (sugar + water)
Stir in lemon juice
Store in fridge up to 1 week
To Serve
Mix:
¼ cup concentrate
1 cup cold water
Adjust to taste.
Why This Is Great
Kids can make it themselves
Quick after-school option
Way cheaper than store-bought
Why I Keep This in Rotation
Encourages hydration without a fight
Feels like a treat, but isn’t overloaded with sugar
Easy enough to make part of our weekly rhythm
